"Murals, Music and Film at Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility, Perrysville, Ohio

Two projects of Wisconsin-based AVEC: - Arts Vitally Enrich Communities

In these two films, guided by community artists Constance Friesen and M. Tim Friesen of AVEC, the young men in the Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility create a mural and a film about the making of the mural, writing and performing their own songs.

"The mission of Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility is to provide holistic substance abuse treatment services to juvenile offenders in a safe and secure, therapeutic community that promotes right living principles for a drug and crime free existence."

"The artistic philosophy of Community Artists Constance Friesen and M. Tim Friesen begins with the premise of creating "with"....with paint, with music, but most importantly, with the communities."

Holly J. Thomas, Recreation Activity Therapy Administrator, Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility writes:

"We invited Tim and Connie to Mohican Juvenile Correctional Facility to head up a mural project. The first completed project is 8X32 ft. and tells a story about our Therapeutic Community. Approximately 168 adjudicated male youth participated in this project. Those youth that preferred not to paint became involved in making a movie showing the process of the mural and putting music to that movie. It was through Tim and Connie’s direction and leadership in painting and songwriting, that the youth were able to express themselves in new ways and create a beautiful work of art. This was accomplished in 4 days."
