The International Development Research Center Project Number: 850316 "Health Care in Gezira". "Researchers interviewed a cross-section of the population of Gezira to determine illnesses reported, and measure the use of different health care sources and reasons for using them. An institution-based study to describe services provided at government institutions was undertaken. Also, researchers interviewed patients at traditional therapeutic communities to determine usage; social characteristics of users; and therapies used. Health care services received by people of different socioeconomic level, ethnicity, cultural practices, and geographical area, were determined. Results indicated that people tended to use the traditional and professional sectors for the treatment of specific ailments. For instance, mental illness and some physical illnesses, such as jaundice, were often treated by the traditional sector. Physical illnesses, such as malaria, were treated by the professional sector. Researchers recommended that the scope and collaboration between the professional and traditional medical sectors be increased for more appropriate and wider coverage, especially for mental disorders." *
