I have been an avid producer of tc and therapy related cartoons. I'm not sure whether others have also done this. Over the next few months I will try to upload some of my cartoons to this page. They are not in any particular order as yet, although when I have done some scanning I may try to establish a chronology to them. Most are drawn in the context of psychotherapeutic work. In general I work to 2 guiding principles whilst doing cartoons:

1. No caricatures: Having learnt my 'art' in the context of TC's I know how easy it is to offend people. I try not to represent anyone in particular in my work. I may represent their actions or an aspect of the situation, but not poke fun at the individual.

2. No jokes that rely on bullying, harrasment, sexism, racism or any other process where one laughs 'at' a person or group of people.

Here is the first cartoon:

This cartoon was drawn in 2003. This was one that appeared in the TC Newsletter. The joke is very simple. I still find it funny!

Now here are some more ( I will write some explanation of their context at a later date):

This cartoon was drawn just before I left Webb House at the end of April 2003. At this point the cartoons had become a part of the institution rather than a rebellious expression.

This cartoon is a later addition to the "reality confrontation" cartoon that was one of the Henderson Hospital 1999 Calendar Cartoons. I will add these cartoons to this collection when I have scanned them in. The inspiration came from lambasting Rapoport's 4 themes: reality confrontation, permissiveness, communalism and democratisation (I think!). Hypocritical feedback was another aspect of TC life. Physic heal thyself!

This cartoon was drawn after a meeting to discuss the lottery funded Research on what makes TC's therapeutic with Jan Lees and Nick Manning at Nottingham. I think this was some time in 2000. The point I'm trying to make is that we are people studying other people. I guess it is trying to say something about the resonance that occurs in TC's between staff and residents, the researchers and the researched.

This cartoon was drawn at the same time as the other lottery funding ones. I think I'd gone by train so it was a good opportunity to draw. The joke turns very simply on the similarity beween "psychopath" and "cycle path". It was a comment on the upsurge in interest in Personality Disorder in general and DSPD in particular.

This cartoon was drawn whilst I worked at Henderson Hospital. It shows death having to go to Surgery (this was where the Nurse would see people, where any analgesia was kept and wounds assessed and treated). One of the guarantees that someone might be asked to give in a referred meeting was to 'hand their sharps in'. This was interesting dynamically as the staff were asked to hold the sharp damaging objects in a safe way. Often what would happen is that these sharps would never be returned and we ended up with a massive box of lethal or at least pointed objects. I thought it would be funny that 'Death' would have to hand his scythe in to surgery.
