Spotlight On...Northfield Military Psychiatric Hospital

A video glimpse

In civilian life it was Hollymoor Hospital in Northfield, Birmingham, United Kingdom.

During the 1939-45 War it was home of the First and Second Northfield Experiments, the First identified with Wilfred Bion and John Rickman, and the second with Harold Bridger, Tom Main, Sigmund Foulkes and others; but together recognised as one of the origins of the therapeutic community movement for adults in post-war Britain, with direct repercussions in the United States as well.

In March 1994 Dr. Tom Harrison, author of "Advancing on a Different Front: Bion, Rickman Foulkes and the Northfield Experiments", gave Craig Fees, Archivist for the Planned Environment Therapy Trust Archive and Study Centre, a guided tour of Hollymoor site prior to its being torn down. Fees videod the tour, and this 20 second clip, which was taken from the hospital's water tower and gives a panoramic view of where so much creative and influential work went on, comes from the video he made. Again guided by Tom Harrison, Craig Fees made a second video in 1996, through the remains and rubble once the hospital had largely been torn down.

The site is now the home of Main House Therapeutic Community.
